English language practical course for the 1st year students, semester 1 (все направления подготовки)
General information about the course
The course aims to develop listening, reading, writing and speaking skills, revise grammar material and increase vocabulary on the topics concerned.
The course is developed for learning English for General Purposes by the first year students
of TPU, 1st semester.
The course covers such topics as education around the world, educational issues, learning strategies, modern skills and qualifications, jobs, job satisfaction, skills and qualifications, career opportunities, choosing a career path, success, recruitment and selection process, strategies of successful interview passing and job-hunting techniques as well as strategies for writing impressive CVs and covering letters.
Learning outcomes
After studying this course students should be able to demonstrate
knowledge of:
• English vocabulary and grammar necessary for successful oral and written communication in the fields related to the thematic scope of the course;
• different methods for searching and analysing information from various English language sources (oral and written);
skills in:
• understanding oral and written English related to education, work, jobs, career, employment;
• generating written and oral statements using English in the situations related to the thematic scope of the course;
• making and delivering presentations in English;
• writing essays and summaries;
• analysing written and oral English to express their agreement/disagreement and justify personal opinions;
experience of:
• constructing coherent arguments and articulating ideas clearly;
• presenting information in a variety of written, graphic and oral forms;
• analysing and explaining concepts/methods relevant to the scope of the course;
• developing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with groupmates;
• planning and organizing personal independent study process through self-study, and, thus, developing their learner autonomy skills.
