English course for interpreters

About the course

The course is intended for students who are aquiring an additional specialization of Translators in professional sphere of communication.

The main objective of the course is to develop students' English language competency (listening, reading, speaking, writing) at the level that will enable them to function adequately as interpreters (English-Russian) and to develop the basic interpreting skills.   The course covers 2 semesters of the first academic year and is supplemented by a Grammar course.

The course covers such topics as memory as a fundamental human capacity, threats of artificial intelligence, longevity, biomimicry, photography, nuclear engineering, biotechnologies, etc. 

Special attention is paid to the development of students' listening skills and memory capacity as one of the crucial skills for interpreting.

Learning outcomes

After doing this course students should be able to demonstrate

KNOWLEDGE OF:
• English vocabulary and grammar that are necessary for successful oral and written communication in the fields related to the thematic scope of the course;
• relevant professional terminology and general scientific notions associated with sciences, technology, artificial intelligence, engineering, photography, etc;
• different methods for searching and analysing of information from various English language sources (oral and written);
• different types of interpreting (consecutive, synchronous interpreting, sight translation);

SKILLS IN:
• understanding oral and written authentic English related to longevity, artificial intelligence, nuclear engineering, biomimicry, photography etc;
• producing fluent English speech;
• generating written and oral statements using English in the situations related to the thematic scope of the course;
• evaluating the translation adequacy of the text, finding the discrepencies in translation/interpretation;
• switching from the original language to target language and vice versa;  
• using tranformation techniques when interpreting;
• following the grammar, syntax and stylistic norms of the Russian and English languages;
• demonstrating psychological stability in the course of interpreting;

EXPERIENCE OF: 
• presenting information in a variety of written and oral forms; constructing coherent arguments and articulating ideas clearly; 
• consecutive and synchronous interpreting, sight translation;
• analysing the adequacy of the interpretation result;
• planning and organizing their independent study process through self-study, and, thus, developing their learner autonomy skills.

Course duration: 32 weeks (16 weeks in each of the 2 semesters)
Course complexity: 240  hours,  6 credits (120 hours for self-study, 3 credits)

fall term - pass/fail exam;
spring term - exam
