Practical course supporting English language learning for the 2nd year students, semester 3 (all training programs)

About the course

The course is intended for developing listening, reading, writing and speaking skills, revising grammar material and increasing vocabulary on the topics. The course covers such topics as education, work and career and employment. The objective of the course is to develop students' English language communicative competency at the level that will enable them to function adequately in everyday life and in their general professional activity.  
The course is developed for learning English for General Purposes by the second year students of TPU, 3 semester. 
The required level of English is A1-B1.
The course is intended for 108 hours.

Learning outcomes

In this course students will acquire skills that will let them:

  • get the subject matter of authentic texts on the topics discussed;
  • get the main concept of authentic radio and TV programs, lectures and conversations on the urgent problems and events;
  • prepare a public speech to solve intercultural tasks;
  • work in teams;
  • define their own opinion via reasoning;
  • write essays, CV, motivation letters.

Course syllabus

1. Module 1. Education ( Educational system in Russia and abroad, Universities of the world/ TPU, Educational issues (time management, exams), Life-long learning, Grammar: Modal verbs + Perfect Infinitive; Revision of tenses: Present tenses (simple/ continuous/ perfect simple/ perfect continuous), Past tenses (simple/ continuous/ perfect simple/ perfect continuous), Future tenses (simple/ continuous/ perfect simple/ perfect continuous); (extra: word order, word formation, linking words, phrasal verbs)).

2. Module 2. Work and Career (Career planning, Choice of profession: the characteristics of professions, Engineering professions, Grammar: Passive voice, Passive with get; Participle 1, 2; Adjectives -ed/ -ing; (extra: word order, word formation, linking words, phrasal verbs)).

3. Module 3. Employment (Job hunting, Applying for a job, Engineering career, Grammar: Infinitive, Gerund, Participle; (extra: word order, word formation, linking words, phrasal verbs)).

4. Final test
