Defects in Solids and Materials Modification

Course Overview

The course is aimed at training specialists able to present key questions in the theory of the real (defect) structure of solid-phase compounds; form the theoretical concepts and develop the understanding of and expertise in the interconnection of the structure and properties of substances; apply the acquired knowledge in the study of the feasibility of development materials with required properties.

Learning Outcomes

Upon the course completion, students will be able to:

(a) master the fundamental concepts, the laws of solid state physics; basic theories and approximations of the condensed matter physics; methods for studying defects in the crystal structure and mechanical properties of materials, the dependence of physical and mechanical properties of materials on the structural defectiveness and on the size of structural elements;

(b) use the influence of size effects on the physical and mechanical properties of bulk nanomaterials; study the properties (mechanical, electrical, optical, thermal, etc.) of solids.
